NewsTrack Blog: Infographics

The Boston Globe sports section utilizes infographics on a fairly regular basis. Especially in sports, infographics are a great way to display information, such as statistics, in a visually appealing and engaging way. The Globe's Sunday edition features a longer sports section with an additional full page devoted to each of the major sports, each with a central graphic. The infographics focus on one particular trend or topic, using images and statistics to tell a unique story. This past Sunday, the Globe's baseball page included a graphic on the New York Yankees' historic home run production in 2018. It compares 2018 to other Yankee seasons with impressive home run totals, and then breaks down each year with more specific information. I have always enjoyed the Globe's Sunday edition, and the addition of interesting and well-crafted infographics are a primary reason for that. If anything, I wish the Globe used infographics more than once a week!

NewsTrack: Video

When it comes to video, the Boston Globe  sports section does a decent job. While they do not produce a lot of video themselves (which is definitely an area for improvement), they do often embed videos from social media in articles when relevant. For example, in this recent article  about the Boston Bruins scoring four goals in a five-minute span, there were three videos embedded throughout. Especially in an article that is specifically about certain plays in a game, adding a visual element to show readers the plays themselves should be a given. In this article, the Globe  delivered. That being said, there is certainly room for more video content. Especially because the Boston teams' social media and photography/videography teams are so good, the Globe  should be taking better advantage of their content, and also producing their own. MBTA developing new Automated Fare Collection System

The MBTA is in the process of developing and implementing a new fare collection system, AFC 2.0. Among other changes, this system will allow commuters to tap at any door on the Green Line and use phones or contactless credit cards to pay for all MBTA services. With accessibility in mind, many commuters are pleased with the changes.
