NewsTrack Blog #2: Audio Reporting

As someone who reads the Boston Globe sports section on a consistent basis, I can confidently say that their audio reporting is seriously lacking. The Globe's sports content is very high quality, but they rarely stray from text, images, and an occasional tweet or video. Last year, the Globe began producing a daily sports podcast, Season Ticket, hosted by columnist Christopher Gasper. Each day, Gasper would cover the top headlines in Boston sports, and interview guests: anyone from his colleagues at the Globe to athletes themselves. I listened to the podcast every day, and I loved it. The program was engaging, informative, and provided insight that was not available in the daily print paper.

Unfortunately, the program lasted only two months, from December 2017 to February 2018. I'm not sure why the Globe halted production, but I know I was very disappointed. The short-lived podcast was by far the best audio reporting I have ever seen (or heard) from the Globe sports department, and I was sad to see it go. Since its end, I have very rarely seen any form of audio reporting or content, either as a standalone or a supplement to written reporting. There is certainly plenty of room for the Globe to expand and strengthen its audio reporting.

When it comes to video, the Boston Globe  sports section does a decent job. While they do not produce a lot of video themselves (which is definitely an area for improvement), they do often embed videos from social media in articles when relevant. For example, in this recent article  about the Boston Bruins scoring four goals in a five-minute span, there were three videos embedded throughout. Especially in an article that is specifically about certain plays in a game, adding a visual element to show readers the plays themselves should be a given. In this article, the Globe  delivered. That being said, there is certainly room for more video content. Especially because the Boston teams' social media and photography/videography teams are so good, the Globe  should be taking better advantage of their content, and also producing their own. MBTA developing new Automated Fare Collection System

The MBTA is in the process of developing and implementing a new fare collection system, AFC 2.0. Among other changes, this system will allow commuters to tap at any door on the Green Line and use phones or contactless credit cards to pay for all MBTA services. With accessibility in mind, many commuters are pleased with the changes.
